The plug-in hybrids Audi Q5 TFSI e and Audi Q5 Sportback TFSI e as well as the A6 Sedan, A6 Avant, and A7 Sportback now have a 17.9 kWh lithium-ion storage battery in the rear instead of their previous gross capacity of 14.1 kWh. As a result, the electric range increases to up to 91 kilometers (A6 Sedan 50 TFSI e) in the NEDC, depending on the model. The maximum charging capacity is 7.4 kW. This allows the Audi PHEV models to be fully charged in around two-and-a-half hours when connected to a sufficiently powerful power connection. The dimensions of the lithium-ion battery have not changed despite its increased energy content.

Longer electric range – same variability and everyday usability

The luggage capacity, usability, and variability remain unchanged: Depending on the model, the luggage capacity is between 405 liters (A6 Avant) and 465 liters (Q5). With the rear bench seat folded down, the maximum usable space for luggage increases to 1,535 liters (A6 Avant) and 1,405 liters (Q5), respectively. The luggage compartment floor is still level, i.e. designed without a step, in all models. 

Audi A6 Avant 50 TFSI e quattro: the entry-level plug-in for commuters and fleet customers

The A6 Avant 50 TFSI e quattro, which now completes the PHEV range from Ingolstadt, is particularly attractive for commuters and fleet customers. It outputs 220 kW (299 PS) of system power and has a maximum torque of 450 Nm. Propulsion is provided by a 2.0 TFSI and an electric motor with an output of 105 kW. As in all plug-in hybrid models from Audi, charging system compact is part of the standard equipment. It comprises cables and plugs for domestic and industrial power sockets and a control panel. The base price for the A6 Avant 50 TFSI e is EUR 61,790. In Germany, it is eligible for the environmental bonus and also benefits from the 50% company car tax reduction – the same applies to the other Q5 and A6 models as well as the A7 Sportback 50 TFSI e.

Four driving modes: now also including “Charge” mode

The five part-time electric vehicles have another new feature: In addition to the familiar operating modes “EV,” “Auto,” and “Hold,” there is now a fourth operating mode called “Charge” mode. It allows the battery to be charged by the combustion engine while driving if necessary, for example before driving into environmental zones.

The Q5, A6 Sedan, and A7 Sportback models are available in two output variants as before: as a 55 TFSI e with a system output of 367 PS and as a 50 TFSI e with 299 PS. Both variants combine a 2.0 TFSI engine with an electric motor that is integrated in the seven-speed S tronic direct-shift transmission. 

With the battery upgrade for the PHEV models Q5, A6, and A7 as well as the new A6 Avant 50 TFSI e quattro model), Audi is continuing its electrification strategy. The compact models A3 Sportback, Q35, and Q3 Sportback6, as well as the full-size class and luxury models Q7, Q8, and A8 are also available as plug-in hybrids.

Audi also set a new benchmark with the digital world premiere, the Day of Progress. Two digital events presented the Audi e-tron GT: in the Sprint of Progress, the Formula E driver Lucas di Grassi and the sustainability entrepreneur and Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg demonstrated the dynamic driving performance of the Audi RS e-tron GT alongside the current Formula E racing car of the Four Rings, the Audi e-tron FE07. In a trip on the circuit of the Audi Driving Experience Center in Neuburg an der Donau, the spotlight was on the dynamic performance of the new model.

A varied program emphasized the forward-looking attitude of the Four Rings brand. With reference to the importance of design, sustainability and performance, the actor and producer Tom Hardy, the designer Stella McCartney and Nico Rosberg added their personal insights. Themusical accompaniment to the unveiling of the car was performed by the US-American singer and songwriter Janelle Monáe, while Steven Gätjen as moderator guided the audience through the show.

The GREENTECH FESTIVAL and Audi, a founding partner of this platform for sustainability, together presented the GREEN FUTURE Award for the first time as part of the world premiere of the Audi e-tron GT. The prize, part of the festival’s GREEN AWARDS, is given to projects and persons that promote environmentally compatible urbanization and at the same time make an important contribution to improving the quality of life in urban infrastructure. The winner is the start-up Zencity, based in Tel Aviv, with an algorithm that collects and analyzes social media posts and local news from cities.

In the Celebration of Progress, the brand with the Four Rings introduced the Audi e-tron GT to the public for the first time. In the hour-long virtual show, Markus Duesmann and Hildegard Wortmann, Board Member for Sales and Marketing, together with further Audi protagonists such as Henrik Wenders, Senior Vice President for the Audi Brand, and Marc Lichte, Head of Design, presented the highlights of the new model.

The employer image also strengthens the reputation of the Four Rings and the attitude of the Audi employees: “The Top Employers Institute is honoring the fact that we have an employer image that is updated regularly and that Audi maintains contact with the different target groups via various communication channels,” explains Florian Husmann from the HR Strategy department, who is also the coordinator of the Top Employer certification at Audi. 

AUDI AG meets nearly 80 percent of the 370 requirements that the Top Employer Institute specifies for employer companies. “That is an excellent result for the initial certification as compared to other employer companies,” Husmann adds. “The results are now helping us to provide new impetus and keep evolving as an employer.”

First use of RFID across technical sections

The technology itself is not new: Audi and other Volkswagen Group brands have been usingRFID technology for vehicle identification for a number of years in areas such as the assembly line and the body shop. However, Audi’s Neckarsulm site will now become the first automotive plant in the Group to deploy this technology across technical sections and throughout the entire production process. An RFID data carrier (“tag”) consisting of a chip and an antenna will be attached to every Audi manufactured at the location – from the Audi A4 to the fully electric e-tron GT – in the body shop during the very first stage of production. The tag will be attachedto the right rear section of the body and will stay on the vehicle as it passes through the paint shop and the assembly line right through to delivery to the customer. The chip contains an identification number. Key vehicle information, such as the body design, paintwork, motorization and equipment of the respective car, can be retrieved with the help of a reader in the production areas. Among other things, this ensures that every Audi that rolls off the production line is consistent with the configuration its new owner selected at the Audi dealer or at home.

Foundations for fully connected automotive production

This involved previously different technologies as well as paper documents in some cases, making it impossible to connect all technical sections. “In consistently using RFID technology on the vehicle throughout the entire production process, we are the first manufacturer to provide all of the relevant data on a single data carrier fully digitally and in real time,” explained Christian Schmidt, who is responsible for the project as part of the digitalization of production and logistics at the Neckarsulm site. “In this way, we are laying important foundations for the comprehensive digitalization of all our production processes,” added his colleague Thomas Vogel. 

In addition to the body shop, the paint shop and the assembly line, the universal rollout of the technology will have benefits in other non-production areas. For example, vehicle logistics will use the tags to locate and identify cars, helping to ensure that every Audi can be delivered to its new owner after completion. Audi employees can make use of a dronethat flies autonomously over the vehicle dispatch area, collecting all of the relevant data. As an important element of fully connected factories, RFID technology will establish itself as the standard across all systems at Audi’s plants worldwide over the coming years.

“On metal tags” used for the first time in production of the e-tron GT

When production of the fully electric Audi e-tron GT began in late 2020, Audi also became the first Volkswagen Group company to use RFID on metal tags (OMT) at its Neckarsulm site. This enhanced version of the data carriertakes one of its original weaknesses and turns it into a strength: Previously it was not possible to attach an RFID data carrierdirectly to the vehicle body, as this interferes with communication between the tag and the reader. The solution is to insert a spacer between the body and the tag. The OMT removes the need for this spacer. The enhanced version takes advantage of the direct contact between the vehicle and the tag: It improves transmission quality by using the body of the e-tron GT itself as an extended antenna. In the future, OMT tags will become a standard feature of the production of new vehicle models throughout the Group.

Neckarsulm to take central responsibility within the Group

Audi’s Neckarsulm site will take a leading role in the area of digital production and logistics throughout the entire Volkswagen Group in the future. The location already has extensive expertise in the areas of vehicle production, logistics and production IT (large-scale and small-series production). The transformation is intended to strengthen these competencies in a targeted manner while developing the plant into a leading location in the area of digital production and logistics. Neckarsulm is focusing on “end-to-end factory transformation” and the provision of tried-and-tested innovative IT solutions throughout the Volkswagen Group.
